Students are designing and developing a large vegetable and native plant garden as part of a new, staff-initiated science program that is based on State science standards, student inquiry and project-based learning. Students will learn about hunger issues as they donate produce to a local food pantry.

For the purchase of 8 complete sets of Insta-Learn boards and problem strips to create a math lab. This math lab will enable first grade students to review, learn and extend a multitude of math concepts independently as part of Linwood’s differentiation of math core.

Students will create an original altered book to demonstrate their understanding of content. Fourth grade students will work on westward movement, and sixth grade students will study science concepts learned at outdoor school, including conservation, weather, and earth processes.

During the school year students will work to develop the outdoor lab space on the North Campus of Sabin-Schellenberg Professional Technical Center (SSC) to increase hands on application of SSC programs. Projects funded by this grant would include school-wide composting, rain barrel installation; and the planting of a garden, fruit trees, and native plant demonstration garden.

Grant funds will be used to purchase two hand-held digital cameras to be used by students to produce original videos demonstrating their knowledge of globalization. Students will develop a comprehensive understanding of globalization, document sources adhering to copyright law, and demonstrate an ability to successfully complete each video production step.

Children will listen in a group or alone to audio recordings of stories and songs that have been downloaded to an iPod. As they listen, students can follow along in the book, exposing them to text beyond their reading ability. Parents, teachers, and students will be able to record their favorite stories for others to listen to.

Funds will be used to purchase science labs that are engaging, sophisticated, fun and that also provide opportunities for students to perform hands-on tasks. The ultimate purpose is to capture the attention of students with engaging labs, increase participation, and steer more students in the direction of science as a career choice.

Funds will allow the purchase of a class set of Student Response System remotes – electronic devices used by students providing instant feedback to the teacher and class regarding understanding of various content/concepts. The teacher can quickly assess student understanding and make immediate decisions regarding instructional review.

Funds will be used to enhance the new two-way Spanish immersion program through the purchase of high-quality, multicultural books.

Grant funds will be used to start a school newspaper. Students will be learning how to write news articles and work on each of the seven main teams of the paper – school/local news, sports, entertainment, monthly recognition, editorials, layout/design and typing/scanning.

Funds will purchase four LeapFrog Learning Systems for the Kindergarten classroom. In additional to the learning systems four interactive books and cartridges will be purchased “making learning fun.”

To Purchase digital imaging equipment to enhance the digital portfolio process and optimize learning for all students, especially those with learning disabilities or motor skills issues who have particular trouble producing handwritten work.
